Sabah Issues : Holders of Project IC will be offered Permanent Resident

Kota Kinabalu: The issue of offering Permanent Resident (PR) status to illegal immigrants does not arise at all.

However, PR status (with no voting right) will be offered to the more than 600,000 people that Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) believes are holding "Project ICs" in Sabah.

PR would be offered to them because the PKR through Pakatan Rakyat had pledged to set up a Royal Commission of Inquiry (RCI) to resolve the illegal immigrant problem.

Veteran politician Dr Chong Eng Leong (pic), who is a committee member of the PKR Sabah Presidential Council for Finances, Security and Immigration (headed by Ahmad Thamrin Jaini) said the RCI, in the process of cleaning the electoral rolls, would have to expunge the names of dubious citizens and that all ICs obtained through Project IC would be revoked.

"Therefore the holders of Project IC will be offered PR but without any voting right," he said, clarifying the misconception on PKR's pledge in the Buku Jingga or Orange Book Sabah chapter.

Speaking to reporters, Monday, Dr Chong said: "Paperless immigrants are straightforward, as they entered the State illegally then they must be dealt with by the law of the country."

Responding to a question on whether PKR was willing to forego the potential votes of 600,000 people, Dr Chong said PKR would not want to win through dirty tactics.

He also took the various Barisan Nasional (BN) Sabah component parties to task for questioning PKR's means to resolve this issue.

But they never dared to question Umno's refusal to call for RCI.

Where is your pride and dignity as well as patriotism towards Sabah?" he asked.

Dr Chong said as far as he was concerned there is now a party, PKR, which was ready to take the bold step and resolve the problem that had been plaguing Sabah for the past 40 years.
