Kota Kinabalu: Implementation of the biometric system throughout the country beginning June this year will not work if the integrity of Immigration officers manning the various entry points is in doubt.
Home Minister Datuk Seri Hishamuddin Tun Hussein said the integrity of personnel at entry points and who would be working closely with their counterparts in the home country of foreign visitors would be the key focus in the proposed implementation.
The other aspects of the system, he said, were the use of technology and equipment and personnel manning the entry points to work closely with airports and ports staff in the country.
Speaking after witnessing the hostage rescue exercise by the Special Action Force at the Kota Kinabalu International Airport (KKIA) just after midnight Saturday, he said the Government had announced it would be looking at advanced screening of international passengers.
"We also want to instill a sense of pride, discipline and integrity in the officers that we have at the entry points," he said, adding he would not compromise when it comes to the safety and security of the country.
Hishamuddin cited the arrest of nine Immigration officers under the ISA as an example where lack of integrity is not being tolerated by the government.
Also on hand to witness the exercise was Chief Minister Datuk Seri Musa Aman.
